‘for He delivered us and saved us and called us with a holy calling [a calling that leads to a consecrated life—a life set apart—a life of purpose], not because of our works [or because of any personal merit—we could do nothing to earn this], but because of His own purpose and grace [His amazing, undeserved favor] which was granted to us in Christ Jesus before the world began [eternal ages ago], ‘
2 Timothy 1:9 AMP
‘He has made everything beautiful and appropriate in its time. He has also planted eternity [a sense of divine purpose] in the human heart [a mysterious longing which nothing under the sun can satisfy, except God]—yet man cannot find out (comprehend, grasp) what God has done (His overall plan) from the beginning to the end. ‘
Ecclesiastes 3:11 AMP
2 Timothy 1:9 has a lot to unpack. First of all, he saved us by sending his son to die for us. This was by his grace. In the same way, by his grace, he put a calling on our lives. God had a specific will for everyone’s lives from before the world began.
This salvation and calling is given to us through Jesus. Jesus’s life awakened that calling like how The Force Awakens in Star Wars. There is a reason great multitudes followed Jesus when he walked on the Earth. People saw Jesus work and it resonated with something inside of them: something that had always been there.
Eternity in Our Hearts
I love the way this is described in Ecclesiastes 3:11 as eternity planted in our heart. Everyone has a God given desire for purpose and making a difference. It is in our nature. This drives people to want to create, conquer, serve, build, explore, multiply, and learn.
God given purpose drives people to want to create, conquer, serve, build, explore, multiply, and learn.
We have an innate drawing towards Jesus and towards the good things of God. It is in moments of stillness when I feel this urging to do something at its strongest. However, it is quite easy to get distracted from this calling in a world of TikTok, Reels, music, and even busy workloads. I once said, “the purest form of what is desired can be overlooked due to the temporal flair of distraction.”
Tune in. Make a difference. We are designed for God. He gifted us with a holy calling. Everyone desires to make a difference and that is by God’s design.
